What is Velasmooth?

On the cutting edge in the rapidly expanding field of body sculpting is VelaSmooth from Syneron Medical Ltd., in Yokneam, Israel, a modern, non-invasive treatment that utilizes an innovative approach to reducing cellulite and leaving skin smoother and less dimpled. The treatment combines infrared light and radio frequencies along with mechanical massage and vacuum suction to manipulate fatty tissue, resulting in reduction of collagen and improved circulation to the area.

VelaSmooth is safe for any kind of skin and particularly effective on large areas of the body such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks or upper arms. The initial treatment consists of 16 sessions over eight weeks with each session lasting 45 minutes to an hour. Best of all, there’s no down time. Patients can resume normal activity after the treatment.

Maintenance treatments are usually done once a month after the initial series. Patients say the treatment feels like a warm deep tissue massage; others say it’s mildly uncomfortable. Treatments cost from around $150 to $200 apiece.

The recently developed Contour Applicator makes VelaSmooth treatments even more effective. Ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in the user’s hand, the Contour Applicator facilitates spot treatments in hard-to-reach areas.

“With VelaSmooth and now the new Contour Applicator, Syneron technology continues to set the standard for the medical aesthetic industry to meet changing consumer needs,” said Doron Gerstel, president of Syneron North America. “We’ve succeeded at creating strong brand awareness among consumers for VelaSmooth treatments, which has generated a very successful business for our physicians. This Contour Applicator will allow these physicians to further enhance the VelaSmooth treatments.”

Since receiving FDA clearance in June 2005, more than 100,000 patients have been treated with VelaSmooth.

“Patients reported that their clothes had a better fit, and while they did not lose weight, they looked as if they did,” said Dr. Tina Alster, director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery and clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University.

"In our clinical study of 20 women of various ages and skin types with moderate thigh and buttock cellulite, significant clinical improvement was observed in skin contour irregularities, and thigh circumferences were also reduced,” Alster said. “Our research has shown that it is no longer necessary to endure painful and lengthy recovery times or be exposed to general anesthesia that is typical of other procedures like liposuction in order to achieve improvement of cellulite."

Many patients with saddlebags and love handles are actually able to measure a reduction in circumference or girth. A healthy lifestyle, which includes a good diet and regular exercise, can also enhance the results of the treatment. Many doctors have reported exceptional results when VelaSmooth is combined with mesotherapy.

“I think we have a machine that finally shows promise and results, whereas I’ve been disappointed with previous machines for cellulite,” Dr. Nowell Solish, medical director of cosmetic dermatology for Espada in Toronto, told Elevate magazine.

VelaSmooth is the latest development from Syneron, which has taken medical aesthetic science a major step forward with its unique ELOS (Electro-Optical Synergy) technology. ELOS maximizes the synergy of conducted RF energy, which is already popular in medicine, and optical energy.

In mid-2005, Syneron Medical Ltd. announced that the US Food & Drug Administration gave its initial approval to market the company’s cellulite reducing technology, called VelaSmooth also known as LipoLite. VelaSmooth is a pain-free, non-permanent and non-surgical alternative for individuals desiring to diminish the appearance of their cellulite
A laser-based technology which gently reduces the appearance of cellulite over the
course of treatment, Velasmooth is gaining national popularity. In addition to smoothing the rippling effect cellulite might have, Velasmooth can also help clients appear to having lost weight. Specifically, Velasmooth incorporates radiofrequency (RF) energy, infrared light, suction, and massage to increase blood flow and push fat cells back into the fat layer, where they won't show through the skin. Purportedly, while the light energy pre-heats the treatment area, gentle suction helps radio frequency energy penetrate into the fat tissue - redistributing and increasing a person’s metabolic level. VelaSmooth is asserted to not only redesign and eliminate the appearance of cellulite, but to also improve lymphatic circulation to promote better overall blood flow.
However, in order for it to be effective, Velasmooth requires minimum of 10 to 12 visits, for a duration of 5-6 weeks. Each session usually costs around  $200, depending on the individual clinic. Moreover, although currently fashionable, Velasmooth produces varying level of results. Nonetheless, women are paying a lot of money to have it improve the texture of their skin.
